U.S. citizens traveling from countries that have Tajik embassies or consulates, except under exceptional circumstances, must obtain their visa  prior to their travel and arrival in Tajikistan. Tajikistan is represented by embassies and consulates in the following countries:  United States of America, United Kingdom, Afghanistan (Kabul, Mazori Sharif), Austria, Belarus, Belgium, China, Egypt, Germany, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russian Federation, Turkey, Turkmenistan, United Arab Emirates (Dubai), and Uzbekistan.

U.S. citizens traveling from countries where there are no Tajik embassies or consulates may apply for a visa at the Dushanbe International Airport upon arrival.  The “upon arrival” visa service does not apply to any other Tajik airports or land borders.

Obtaining a visa at the airport may entail some wait time at the Consular bureau at the airport, which in rare cases may not even be staffed.

To apply for a tourism (T) visa you need:

  • two visa application forms (available at the airport and/or theTajik Embassy website)
  • your travel itinerary
  • two passport photos (3×4 cm)
  • U.S. passport which has at least six months validity
  • Photocopy of the biographical page of your passport

Tourist visas are issued for a duration not exceeding 45 days and are not subject to extension or replacement. If you are issued a tourist visa you should leave the country before the visa expiration date.

All other types of visa applicants must have Tajik visa support in the form of a letter from the Tajik Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) confirming that a visa may be issued upon arrival at the airport.

Obtaining a Visa Support Letter:

For travelers invited by an organization, the organization must submit a request to the MFA at least two weeks in advance of their guests’ planned travel date.

Persons arriving at the invitation of a Tajik friend or family member need to first obtain a notification letter from the Ministry of Interior Affairs Department of Visas and Registration (OVIR).  Processing could take up to 45 days. Once the notification letter is obtained, a visa support letter should be requested from the MFA.

Tourist without an invitation from a Tajik citizen or organization may get a visa support letter from a licensed tourist agency of your choice.

Special entry requirements for the Gorno-Badakhshan Region: Entry into the Gorno-Badakhshan region, both from inside and outside of Tajikistan, requires special authorization in advance and in addition to a valid Tajik visa. Travelers can obtain this authorization at Tajik embassies and consulates abroad, or by applying to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) or the Ministry of Interior Affairs Department of Visas and Registration (OVIR) once in Tajikistan. Tajik authorities advise sponsoring organizations to submit their requests at least two weeks in advance of planned travel. The traveler will receive an authorization stamp listing the settlements and cities in Gorn-Badakhshan where the traveler plans on visiting. The Gorno-Badakhshan travel authorization is not written on the Tajik visa; it is a separate notation placed in the recipient’s passport. Tajik authorities consider an attempt to enter the Gorno-Badakhshan region without travel authorization a violation of the Tajik border-crossing regime, and violators will be arrested and prosecuted.

Tajik Transit Visas:

Travelers transiting through Russia en route to a third country or enroute to Tajikistan need to consult the U.S. Embassy Moscow websitefor information regarding transit visas for Russia. Russian authorities may refuse to allow a U.S. citizen who does not have a transit visa to continue with his or her travel, obliging the person to immediately return to the point of embarkation at the traveler’s own expense.
Please note: It is not possible to obtain a Russian visa at the airport.  Arrival without the needed visa can also result in additional restrictions on future travel to Russia.
