Fees for a visa

If you submit your visa application at a Swedish mission abroad, the fee is EUR 60. The visa fee for minors aged 6-12 years is 35 euro. As a rule, the fee is payable in local currency. Further information is available from the embassy or consulate general where you will submit your application. There are however certain exceptions to this rule.

No fee

Totally exempt from the fee are:

  • children under the age of six
  • schoolchildren, students in higher education, postgraduate students and their accompanying professors — on condition that the purpose of the trip is study or education
  • researchers — on condition that the purpose of the trip is scientific research
  • relatives of citizens of the EU, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland if they are travelling with the relative or will meet in connection with the journey

Relatives of citizens of the EU, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland must present a certificate which confirms the marriage or familial relationship. The following persons are classified as relatives:

  • husband or wife
  • registered partner
  • common-law spouse (does not apply to persons co-habiting with Swiss citizens)
  • a child under the age of 21 or an older child who is financially dependent on its parents
  • parents who are financially dependent on children in Sweden.

Relatives of Swedish citizens must, however, pay a fee to apply for a visa.

Reduced fee

Citizens of countries which are signatories to the Visa Facilitation Agreement with the EU pay a reduced fee or are exempt from paying any fee. Information on what applies to respective countries can be obtained from embassies and consulates general of the EU Member States in these countries. The signatory countries are:

  • Albania
  • Bosnia
  • Georgia
  • Macedonia
  • Moldavia
  • Montenegro
  • Russia
  • Serbia
  • Ukraine

Extension of visa

There is no charge for an extension application owing to force majeure or humanitarian grounds. However, an application for an extension of a visa on grounds of strong personal reasons costs EUR 30.
The Migration Board does not accept cash payment
Since 15 June 2011 the Swedish Migration Board does no longer accept cash payment. If you cannot pay with a credit card you will receive a paying-in slip when you submit your application in person.
