All foreigners, including Nationals of EU countries, need work permits before they can take up employment in Fiji.
Permits for temporary or seasonal work need to be obtained by the employer. The kind of work permit you should apply for will depend on how long you plan to work there. Of the various options, there are two in particular that will most likely be relevant:
1. Work Permit for Non-Citizen Skilled Contracted Workers
These work permits are normally valid for three years and would apply for most applicants looking to work in Fiji. The permit is tied to the specific job you’re going for, so you can’t do other work while in Fiji on this work permit.
For the most part the job needs to be advertised locally first, so that you can prove as part of your application that the position couldn’t be filled by a Fijian. Changing your employer while in Fiji needs to be approved by the Director of Immigration, and your passport needs to be valid for the duration that the permit covers.
2. Short Term Work Permit
Short Term Work Permits are for people who are going to be working in Fiji for six months or less. Like the longer work permit they are issued for a specific job, which means you can’t do other work while you’re in the country under this permit, and it becomes invalid if you leave the job that you got the permit for.
If you’re applying for a work permit it’s better to do it from outside the country – the Fiji High Commission states that these work permits won’t be given to someone already in the country on a visitor’s permit.
