How to Change a Tourist Visa to a Working Visa in Japan

In order to change a tourist visa to a work visa during that time, you must, within those 90 days, find a company willing to sponsor you for a work visa, apply for the work visa, and remain in Japan until the application is processed.

Step 1

Find a company willing to both employ you as well as sponsor your work visa application. Since you already have a tourist visa, you get 90 days to find a job and fill out the application for the work visa at the Japanese Embassy. Step 2

Apply for  a Certificate of Eligibility from the Japanese Ministry of Justice’s Immigration Bureau. You are required to submit this certificate of eligibility in addition to your application forms. It certifies that you have the qualifications of the profession or job for which you are applying.

Step 3

Fill out the work visa application forms and return them to the Japanese Ministry of Justice’s Immigration Bureau. Your employer will also need to fill out the employer visa application forms, which can also be obtained at the Japanese Ministry of Justice’s Immigration Bureau.

Step 4

Wait up to two months to hear the results of your application. If you are denied application, you must leave the country before your tourist visa ends. If you are issued a work visa, you do not need to do anything with your tourist visa, simply allow it to expire.
